Purpose

</DIV>

Special Aging consists of the Solar Radiation Test and the Ozone Test.  The Solar Radiation Test is an accelerated aging test conducted to determine the effects of solar radiation energy on equipment within a controlled environment. The Ozone Test is an accelerated aging test conducted to check the effects of ozone on natural rubber components.  The limits and energy levels which are specified provide the simulated effects of natural sunshine and are considered to be representative of irradiation in most geographic locations.

Applications

</DIV>

The Solar Radiation Test is applicable to equipment, which may be exposed to solar radiation during service or continuous exposure.  Detrimental effects due to solar radiation might include:

·        Solar heating effects which may cause bending, differential expansion, cracking, crazing, softening and melting, binding, and the permanent hardening of plastic, rubber, and gasket materials.

·        Degradation from spectral energy may result in the fading of fabric, paint, and foam colors, and the deterioration of rubbers, foams, and plastics.

The Ozone Test is applicable to natural rubber components (phono bearings, microphone shock mounts, etc.)  Detrimental effects due to ozone are the cracking and hardening of the rubber components.

Equipment

·        The Ozone test chamber located in the CQE laboratory.  The test chamber is used for both the Solar Radiation Test and the Ozone Test.  For shortened periods of time the chamber simulates Solar Radiation Test conditions, and for longer periods of time the chamber simulates conditions for the Ozone Test.

Procedure

</DIV>

Solar Radiation Test

1.      Position the product inside the Ozone Test Chamber, (EQA 4-7) in accordance with the products normal mounting position.  In addition, products under test shall be positioned in a manner such that contact between products is not made and so that each product receives essentially the same degree of solar radiation.  NOTE: Do not defeat the safety switch that is operated by the top cover.

2.      After the product has been exposed to 48 hours of the Solar Radiation Source, remove the product from the Ozone Test Chamber and perform the necessary inspections.

Ozone Test

2.      After the product has been exposed to 500 hours of the Solar Radiation Source, remove the product from the Ozone Test Chamber and perform the necessary inspections.

Evaluation of Results

The products must be visually acceptable and pass any specified mechanical test.
